Heat Stress - A Simple, Physical, and Emotional Annoyance

Heat Stress

Heating units, sometimes called hydronic and convective heat stress sensors, are a type of thermometer used in the medical industry for a variety of applications. The term "heating" refers to the process of raising the temperature of a region. Indoor heating systems provide a convenient temperature-control solution in homes and small offices. Outdoor applications use portable instruments that utilize electricity or propane to increase the temperature of outdoor areas. Many heating applications also use the latest technology, including infrared technology.

Heating monitors are primarily used in the construction and industrial sectors to monitor air temperatures and prevent overworking of equipment. High temperatures present serious problems for workers and can lead to serious injury or even death. Indoor heating applications provide comfort and a safe work rate during hot conditions. Heat stress can cause the internal temperature of the human body to rise above 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit). Symptoms may include headaches, dizziness, excessive sweating and skin irritation.

It is important for companies to provide their workers with ample rest periods and a comfortable work rate. This allows workers to reduce their dependence on artificial sources of heat and reduce the risk of heat stress symptoms. During hot days, workers should take time to refresh themselves and get sufficient sleep. If possible, individuals should avoid working when uncomfortable.

Employees are exposed to heat stress on a regular basis. This occurs when the work rate does not allow the body to rest comfortably between periods of intense physical activity. A rise in core temperature causes the heart rate to increase in preparation for additional activity. If the rate remains high after the first break down, it will be harder to return to a comfortable core temperature.

Some people are more susceptible to heat stress than others are. People that have a family history of hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity are more likely to develop symptoms. People that exercise regularly, drink plenty of water and eat a healthy diet are less susceptible to heat exhaustion.

Other factors, such as being in a job that requires standing for long periods of time, may contribute to the development of symptoms. During hot days, companies should make sure their workers take frequent rest periods. In addition, employees should stay cool by drinking plenty of water. The use of fans or air conditioners during prolonged periods of high temperatures can help alleviate symptoms.

To prevent heat stress symptoms from developing, companies should monitor their body temperature regularly. Workers should also avoid sitting in hot chairs or standing for long periods of time. Employees should avoid eating spicy foods and drinking alcohol. Taking a vacation at a cooler climate away from windows that direct natural light can also decrease symptoms. Hot days can also be alleviated by adjusting an individual's work schedule to provide more day time work in cooler areas.

Other methods that can help ease heat stress include the use of cool showers, applying ice to the back of the neck, exercising, resting, and drinking cool water. A person can also take medications prescribed by a doctor to reduce symptoms. Heat exhaustion is not something that will deter a worker from remaining alert and productive.

Heat stress symptoms include dizziness, cramps, sweating, increased heart rate, and feeling weak. Some of these symptoms can last for several days or weeks and some can go away on their own. While some people only experience mild symptoms, others will develop severe heat stress rash that will make it extremely difficult to get through the day. When the symptoms become too much, they should be evaluated by a doctor.

Heat stress is a dangerous condition because it can have serious health effects. People who are affected by heat stress may experience heat exhaustion, kidney disease, stroke, and heart disease. While there is no known cure for heat stress, certain treatments, such as taking medication and avoiding strenuous physical activities, can help relieve symptoms.

When heat stress occurs, it is often taken for granted until it leads to other medical problems. Heat exhaustion and heat-related illness are often overlooked and not taken seriously. People do not always realize how damaging heat-related illnesses can be. Taking some simple precautions, such as removing clothing and using an air conditioner if needed, can make treating heat stress easier.
